"Over a foot"

12" x 16" - Oil on linen

The morning after a monster snow here in Minnesota. I had painted this scene so many times in my head I decided to actually do it. Painted in studio from prior studies and photographs.

More

More drawings. Generally 2 - 2 1/2 hour poses. The bald guy was about an hour long pose. Itching to paint but content to work in monochrome for now...

Drawings

Two nights a week the Old Town Artists in downtown St. Paul hold open drawing sessions. One is a figure drawing session and the other a portrait session. I thought I would post some of my work from the portrait sessions here plus a couple of miscellaneous sketches.

These are from my small sketchbook I carry around. They aren't always drawn from life. Anything will do sometimes from posters to magazine ads etc...if I can catch a real person sitting still long enough, all the better.

"Schaars Bluff, morning"

9" x 12"  -  Oil on panel

I painted over the course of a few days at Spring Lake Park Reserve. This area is called Schaars Bluff and it overlooks the Mississippi River. It was a cloudless few days. The following two paintings are others I painted there as well.

"Windpower!"

"Sundown at Crosby"

9" x 12"  -  Oil on panel

The last light of the day. The ice floes were flying down the Mississippi, which was very high.

"Maura"

20" x 16"  -  Oil on linen

Not for sale

My daughter. This one was a lot of fun to paint.

Before I started this one, I took some time to play a little. I just wanted to get some colors down and push paint around. I wasn't concerned with a likeness at this point. Just pure play. That is the sketch below.

"Theo Wirth"

8" x10"  -  Oil on panel

Painted a couple of weeks ago. Not that you could tell with the snow we had this morning!

"Lunch Crowd"

12" x 16"  -  Oil on stretched canvas

The strong noon light cast a really nice deep shadow across this scene. I like how the details get lost in them. I'm making an effort to get more figures in my work where it feels right. I wanted to reinforce the leisurely noon-time theme here with the ladies enjoying a post-lunch stroll along the avenue.
